These shoes have been handmade in Agra, India by family owned and operated factory Gupta Overseas Pty Ltd. They have been in business for over 60 years and specialise in making shoes for the European market. We visit the factory two to three times a year to see our products being made, assess working conditions, source materials and learn new techniques.
Each design is tested at ELK HQ where the shoes are worn for a period to consider comfort, wear and style. The leather upper is made using REACH standards, a European Union regulation (1907/2006/EC) restricting the levels of specific chemical substances in goods. It is a bi product from the meat industry.
Gupta run an in-house training institute with the sole objective to train rural, underprivileged youths, particularly those who live below the poverty line to enhance their employability.
"These prospective candidates are mobilised by us. The company also arranges their accommodation and food and pay them a monthly stipend. The entire expenses of the training institute are born by us. It is so we who give back to the community and these people can then have skills to get work in the future." - Mr Chetan Gupta, Director
